Service, quite simply, is community service.  Not everyone can afford to donate money, so here you will find just a few ideas on how to give back.

I've always impressed upon my children the importance of service.  Since they were in pre-school I've told them that before they set out in life they will give something back to their community, or their community at large. They will give 2 years of service, they don't have a choice in that, but how they serve is up to them (whether it's in the US Armed Forces, Americorp, Peace Corp, etc).  My children know how lucky they are, they've never gone hungry, always had clothes on their backs and a roof over their heads, they know not everyone has that.

Whether it's giving money, your time, your services, or even your hair (you'll see below), there are so many ways to make a difference.
I heard about "Locks Of Love" several years back, and thought it was such a wonderful (non-profit) organization.

While I do not have money to donate to causes, I do have something else that is needed just as much....... my hair!

"Locks Of Love"  provides hairpeices to children under 18yo, with long-term hair loss (due to medical conditions),  who can't afford them.

The button above will take you to their website where you can learn more about what they do, the kids they've helped out, and how YOU can help.

All it really takes to help is an extra 10 inches of hair (or more).

I had my hair cut to donate, and my "before & after" pictures are below.  I was able to donate 11inches!

Please visit the "Locks Of Love" website, look around, hopefully some of you will decide to help some very deserving kids (don't forget to take a look at their photo gallery!).

My donation pictured below was in 2004, due to an unfortunate "hair layering" incident, it's taken me some time to get my hair back to one length and grow it out again, this time I'm aiming for my waist....just a few more inches to go!

Sorry the pictures aren't the best.

Adopting an animal instead of buying from a pet store breeder is a very simple thing to do when your looking at getting a pet.
PetFinder lists much more than just dogs and cats! Any kind of animal you can think of is listed there.  If you're looking for a purebred, there are many purebred rescue organizations there too.

Another way to help, if you don't have the ability to be a forever home (work makes you move alot, etc), is to be a foster home for a rescue organization in your area.

My family fosters guinea pigs for Have-A-Heart Guinea Pig Rescue.  Below are pictures of just some of the piggies I've fostered (they've all found homes!).
